Sustainability in the UAE has long been a national priority but today, it’s becoming a tangible requirement for the events industry.

In 2024, the Department of Culture and Tourism, Abu Dhabi (DCT) introduced a comprehensive Event Sustainability Guideline, modeled on respected frameworks like the UNWTO, Green Globe, and Estidama’s Pearl Rating System.

While non-binding, it provides a strategic roadmap for organizers and venues to enhance sustainability across key dimensions:

• 02Water management: Promote efficient fixtures and consumption tracking
• 03Waste: Introduce waste separation, composting, and recycling stations
• 04Mobility: Recommend EV use, shared transport, and logistics efficiency
• 05Biodiversity: Reduce environmental disruption through layout planning

It’s setting the tone for what responsible events in Abu Dhabi should look like

For organizers seeking formal recognition, ISO 20121 offers an internationally recognized certification for sustainable event management. It’s now available through several UAE-based providers, including SGS, TÜV, and URS.

Based on the “Plan, Do, Check, Act” cycle, ISO 20121 requires:

• 02Measurable KPIs for energy, waste, water, and social impact
• 03Continuous improvement and stakeholder accountability

For brands, agencies, and venues, ISO 20121 delivers credibility, risk reduction, and enhanced public image, all while contributing to the UAE’s broader ESG goals.

Starting mid-2025, the UAE Federal Climate Law (Decree 11/2024) will require emissions reporting for all high-impact sectors including large-scale events.

While still early in rollout, the implications are clear:

• 01The Desert Vipers cricket match reduced per-fan emissions to 8.6 kg CO₂e using biofuel generators, EV shuttles, recycled kits, and a public sustainability report
